Lost Brigadeers - Where's Waldo! |
|
The Lost Brigadeers formed after Waldo Green, the leader of their previous band Bozo Brigade, died in a mysterious car accident one Winter in the late 1980s. Waldo Green and his band were preparing for a major concert tour which would start at the Psychedelly in Bethesda, Maryland. Waldo planned to join the rest of the band at the club for sound check after an important meeting with the band's manager, Dirk Travers, A freak snow storm delayed Waldo and the band went through sound check without him. The opening band, Bethesda's own Scary 1s, completed their set and Waldo still had not appeared. The members of the BozoBrigade attempted to play through their songs with local scene legend "left hand" from Onto Gel filling in for Green, but nothing went right that night. As the first song started, the power went out in the Psychedelly. The band played "The Rats in Aunt Martha's Room" in the dark without amplification and continued on, attempting to piece together their songs by tapping out intricate rhythms on their all-electric instruments. There were ominous gaps in the songs where Waldo would normally stride up to a microphone and make urgent proclamations to the audience. It was all too much to bear for everyone. And when the power finally came back on the audience was gone. There was only a message spray painted across the front of the club: "Where's Waldo!". |

The next morning, a chilly Sunday in Bethesda, Maryland, it was reported on WGNS newstalk radio that Green's three-wheeled delivery van had been found smashed and thoroughly burned on the rocks at the bottom of the White Cliffs of Bethesda. The charred body was not immediately identified due to the massive explosion. Finally the dental impressions from the corpse were retrieved and definitively identified the corpse as Waldo Green. Curiously, there was no funeral. Waldo's secretive family, the Greens of Chamberly Island in Maine immediately brought the body back to be buried in the family plot without any public showing. |

The Bozo Brigade tour was canceled. Without a chance to mourn the loss of their leader, the members of the band slowly drifted apart. Waldo's widow, Graviella Green, was spurned by his family. Penniless, hopeless and slightly mad she was committed to a home for widows in New England. Over the next few years the Bozo Brigade would occasionally get together to work out versions of their songs for a tribute record under the name "The Lost Brigadeers." But during a trip to the memorial at the site of Waldo's horrible death to record a new all-acoustic version of "We are calling you" (from Bozo Brigade's acclaimed "Music to Go Psycho By / Sountrack for a Midnight Snack" split cassette) percussionist Rollo disappeared without a trace. The band decided to call it quits and the album was never released. A few of the songs went on to be covered by the Blood Bats on their incredibly successful second album and the proceeds were donated to the widow Green's trust. |

The mystery of Waldo's death and the vanishing of Rollo haunted the surviving members. Independently, each one started to investigate the original incident and discovered inconsistencies in the official report. Apparently Waldo had left a note at the scene which somehow survived the conflagration. The note simply said "I'm waiting for the other W." As they dug deeper it turned out that Rollo had written in his datebook "reservation with W" for the very date of his disappearance. Who was this "W"? During a trip by the band to seek more answers in Maine, they discovered that the Green family had never lived on Chamberly Island. Instead, the island was home to a whale sanctuary funded by the Graviella Green trust. Why were the Blood Bats royalty checks funding a whale sanctuary instead of frail widow Green? |

It wasn't until 2013 that the surviving members of Bozo Brigade got together again, this time to tell their story and reveal the unbelievable truth about the death of their leader Waldo Green. These songs will take you on a terrifying trip to places no sane person would ever wish to go. But the truth must be told. And you must listen very carefully. |
